Postpartum Doula
What is the role of a Postpartum Doula? A Postpartum Doula is someone who makes themselves available to you during what is known as the Fourth Trimester. After birth, life has changed drastically, for the better, but with challenges to be certain. A postpartum doula is as involved or uninvolved as each woman sees fit for her, her family, and her new baby. Having support during this period of time, someone to visit with nourishing foods, to pick up the house, to play with siblings and let mom and baby rest, to hold baby while mom showers, to notice if external help may be needed, and offer gentle guidance in seeking resources, the list goes on. As a mother of four children aged 1 year to 8 years, I like to believe I have a lot of experience with prenatal, birth and postpartum, and from experience, know how important support is during this period.
The three main pillars of Postpartum Doula support are:
Pillar 1: Emotional Support
This pillar is the heart of Postpartum Doula care. My goal is to listen with a non-judgmental ear, to offer gentle guidance where I can. There will undoubtedly be sleepless nights, cranky days, and stress between family members. All of this is normal and to be expected, but can also be navigated with the support of a Postpartum Doula. I would love to show up and support you, wherever you’re at in your day. The baby didn’t sleep and you’re exhausted because neither did you, nor your partner. Let me make tea and listen to your concerns, let me hear you vent and afterwards, I will make you a nourishing snack and hold baby in another room while you and your partner cuddle up with a book, a show, or time to connect in any way that feels right for you. You haven’t showered and you’re covered in spit-up, the older sibling is raging for attention, and you feel like you can’t take another minute. I’m there to entertain brother or sister, hold baby and allow you to relax in the shower and establish a new self-care routine.
